Corey Davis Won’t Be the Breakout Rookie of 2017

Corey Davis is on everyone’s radar this year as a potential rookie with major upside to breakout. Davis was drafted 12th overall by the Titans in the 2017 draft. Davis posted gaudy offensive stats during his senior year of college at Western Michigan. Playing all four years of college ball should have Davis ready for the challenges ahead in the NFL. However, here are the two biggest reasons to not buy into the hype around Davis his rookie season.

The largest factor for Davis not having the season that many are hoping for is the signing of veteran wide receiver Eric Decker by the Titans in June. Decker is a target monster, averaging 120 targets per season between the 2011-2015 seasons. Decker only played in three games in 2016 due to hip and shoulder injuries that sidelined him for the season.

A lot of the targets that were destined for Corey Davis, will likely go to a reliable veteran like Eric Decker. Don’t forget that Eric Decker is also known as a major red zone threat due to his size and ability to get open in the end zone.

Speaking of getting open in the red zone, did you forget about Mariota’s favorite end zone target Delanie Walker? Walker is going into his fifth season with the Titans. All previous seasons with Tennessee, Walker has had at least 60 receptions.

The second largest factor for Davis having a lack luster rookie campaign is plain and simple. The Titans have two solid running backs, and love to pound the ball behind their aggressive offensive line. Both DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry are capable running backs that have the ability to both run and catch the ball out of the backfield.

Corey Davis at best, is the fifth best option to go-to in this offense. Mariota and the Titans prefer Decker, Murray, Walker, and Henry all before targeting Davis. Without any question, the talent is there for Davis. However, with so many mouths to feed in Tennessee, I am not certain that Davis will get the opportunity for a breakout rookie season.
